Hanthana Bird Park: A Fabulous Place for Bird Lovers
– 2.7 km from Villa
Hanthana Birds Park (Hanthana International Bird Park & Recreation Center) is a recently established travel destination near the famous Kandy City. It is a superb spot for nature and bird lovers. Here you can see more than 100 different bird species, making it a must-visit destination when you come to Kandy next time.
The place is situated 6 kilometers away from the busy city of Kandy. You can observe the famous Hanthana Mountain Range from there. Anyone can easily identify that mountain range because of its established radio transmission towers. However, you should now go towards this hilly area to reach this beautiful bird park.
To reach the location, you should first come to Kandy. Next, you should drive towards the Bogambara Stadium, and you must turn left there to find the Kandy General Hospital. From there, you should drive around 5 kilometers to reach this destination.
The Pekoe Trail
– 2.4 km from Villa
The Pekoe Trail is a 300+km, long-distance walking trail traversing the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The interconnecting trail is the first in a series of walking trails by Serendipity Trails that allows visitors to discover the varying terrain, history, culture, food, and local communities across Sri Lanka by foot. There are 22 stages in the trail, which can be done as short sections, or as part of a multi-day experience.
The Pekoe Trail is the brainchild of adventurer Miguel Cunat, who spent many years hiking in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. His expertise was developed with the generous support and funding of the European Union (EU) with additional support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Discovering Sri Lanka by foot is the ethos behind the brand and the trails, which are designed to demonstrate the island’s diversity, encourage sustainable travel and bring economic opportunity to underserved, rural communities. Serendipity Trails aims to promote a more holistic traveler experience in line with emerging travel trends embracing adventure, nature, wellness, and sustainability.

The Ceylon Tea Museum
– 2.5 km from Villa
The Ceylon Tea Museum at Hantane, three kilometres from Kandy city is served by a motorable road that circles the museum, provides easy access and adequate parking facilities for cars and tourist coaches.
The museum consists of four floors. The ground floor and the second floor exhibit very old items of machinery and the first floor consist of a library and an auditorium with facilities for audio visual presentations. The third floor is allocated to tea sales outlets, where a selection of Sri Lanka’s fine tea is available. The entire top floor is a tea cafe.
A panoramic view of the Kandy town surrounded by the beautiful Hunasgiriya, Knuckles Range and the Matale range of hills can be viewed through a telescope mounted on the fourth floor. The grounds surrounding the Tea Museum are landscaped with different varieties of teas. Kandy is a mandatory stop virtually on every tourist’s itinerary and the location of the Ceylon Tea Museum at Hantane enhances the attraction of the hill country to visitors. Additionally, its proximity to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and Loolecondera estate, where tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka makes Hantane the perfect location.










Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
– 5.7 km from Villa
The most prominent garden in Sri Lanka, Royal Botanical Gardens is situated 5 km west of Kandy. The gardens are home to more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. It is a 147 acre – of natural elegance most famous for its orchids.
The garden has species of floral representations from all over the world that boast tropical trees and shrubs. The great world icons also planted trees to commemorate their visit to Sri Lanka and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya. Her Highness Queen Elizabeth II, Marshal Tito – PM OF Bhutan, and Yuri Gagarin have stepped on this creation. The fauna in the gardens include magpies and common birds, along with some migratory birds, turtles, and monkeys. There is also a café that serves superb home-cooked cuisine, which makes visiting the gardens a treat to the eyes and belly!
Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth)
– 5.6 km from Villa
Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the highest venerated Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha and makes the sacred city of Kandy a World Heritage Site. Located within the royal palace complex, the temple was initially built by King Vimaladharmasuriya I to deposit the tooth relic, then the building is gone before erected by Vira Narendra Sinha as the present-day temple.
The beautifully magnificent octagonal Paththirippuwa were added in Sri Vikrama Rajasinha’s time which is now the temple’s library. Every day there are worships in the inner chamber conducted by monks of the two chapters of Malwatte and Asgiriya, at dawn, at noon and in the evenings.
Typically, on Wednesday, visitors can experience a symbolic bathing of the sacred relic in holy water and fragrant flowers called Nanumura Mangallaya. Steeped in cultural heritage and history, Sri Dalada Maligawa is an inspiring place you should not miss in Sri Lanka.










Sandagiri Maha Seya
– 4.1 km from Villa
Sandagiri Maha Seya is a new landmark of Kandy and of her backyard mountain, the Hanthana Range. The large white dagaba is situated close to the 850 m high pass of the Handana-Uduwela road from Kandy to Galaha From. The pass is in only 1.7 km /1 mile) distance from the Ceylon Tea Museum, another major tourist attraction of Kandy. The driving dustance from the center of Kandy uphill to the pass is 6 km (4 miles).
Very close to the 850 m high pass, a steep and winding side road branches off to the car park of the Sandagiri Maha Viharaya, which is the temple at the foot of the stairway to the big stupa. The terrace of the stupa, which is in an elevation of 930 m above sea level. The terrace offers a 180 degree panoramic view to Hanthana Range with the cliifs of Katusukonda und Uragala to the right and the valley of the Mahaweli River to the left.
The Sandagiri Maha Seya is one of Sri Lanka’s new giant dagaba constructions from our century, supported by public and private donations, for example collected by the Path Nirvana Foundation. With a height and almost equal diameter of 33 m (more than 100 feet), the Sandagiri Maha Seya is the largest stupa in Kandy District. In Sri Lanka’s Central Province, only the record-breaking dome of the Kotmale Maha Seya in Nuwara Eliya District is bigger.
